Hello and a very warm welcome to all our residents, families and sponsors of Leonard Pulham House. We trust you are all enjoying our lovely spring weather. The Leonard Pulham gardens are now bursting into life with daffodils, camellias and pansies. The first event for this newsletter was our stall on the Wendover Charity Market on the 26th November. We arranged a tombola and raised a grand total of £162. Thank you to Sylvia Bennett for organizing this event, also to all the volunteers who arrived in shifts to help on the day – Brenda Forty, Doreen Wright, Audrey Arnott, Parvin Diaz (who came with supplies of hot coffee and rolls for us all!) and Doreen Young. We also made up three hampers and held a raffle in the Nursing Home, raising £203. Also a big “thank you” to Lindy Clews who made so many beautiful Christmas cards for us to sell alongside the tombola and raffle.

‘Germains Male Voice Choir’ by Harry Purver

On the 27th November there was an arrival of dark figures with black cases seen moving carefully amongst the wheelchairs to the conservatory. Then – with much checking and chattering – they installed themselves as “The Germains Male Voice Choir”. A very gifted lady member played the Roland Baby Grand Piano. Also there was a lady conductor to conduct the Male Voice Choir! The staff had moved tables and chairs and an attentive audience of residents were seated in a circle, with me at the side for a quick getaway (if required).

At 2.00 p.m. precisely the “Master” stepped forward and opened proceedings, starting with their old school song, which was so rousing we all woke up! The programme continued with well-known songs, a dramatic poem and songs from ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Oliver’ to name just a few.

We all enjoyed the afternoon very much, which was followed by Leonard Pulham tea and cakes!

by Harry Purver – Resident Scribe

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our first shopping trip on the 1st December to Milton Keynes, due to unforeseen circumstances. However, this was rescheduled for January 2012.

The children from Halton Combined School came in on the 9th December, to entertain the residents with Christmas songs from their various Christmas plays and also sang some carols. This was a lovely afternoon for everyone who attended and a really good start to the festive season!

On the 12th December we went off to Milton Keynes on our rescheduled shopping trip. All the residents who went on this trip enjoyed themselves and managed to get any shopping needed. Fortunately it was not too busy.

Mrs. Royle also organised a Church service in the lounge for any residents wishing to attend.

Colin and Phillipa came in on the 16th December and we had a Carol Concert. Phillipa played our baby grand piano and we had a fabulous afternoon, accompanied by sherry and mince pies! A big “thank you” to Colin and Phillipa for their continued support of Leonard Pulham House.

Our Christmas party for residents was held on the 19th December. Sharon and her staff provided a wonderful buffet lunch, then we had a raffle, followed by “Banjovi”, who entertained us with a rousing selection of songs and Christmas carols. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped to make this such a success for the residents.

Our Christmas Communion Service was held on the 22nd December. Glynis, Martin (and his grandson) and Judy came from St. Mary’s Wendover. The Communion was accompanied by carols, with Mark on the piano

Rob King returned to Leonard Pulham House on Friday 23rd December. Rob had put together a compilation of musicals including ‘Holiday Inn’ (White Christmas), ‘South Pacific’ and ‘Paint Your Wagon’. We all enjoyed seeing this on a big screen in such good quality. We also had the draw for our hampers after this – well done to everyone who won a prize!

On Monday the 26th December we held our Residents v. Staff Quiz – the staff managed to win (by a short margin) this year! Never mind, there is always next year to turn the tables!

The children from Cholesbury School came back to Leonard Pulham House on the 6th January (unfortunately they had to cancel before Christmas due to staff sickness). We had a lovely afternoon listening to the children singing and playing various instruments for us – a very talented group of children. They have promised to come back to us during 2012.

Our New Year entertainment was held on the 8th January. Fiona Harrison came back to L.P.H. to perform for us. This was a lovely afternoon; we sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at the conclusion and toasted in the New Year with bubbly! Fiona will be entertaining at our Summer Garden Party on Sunday 8th July and we are hoping as many family members and sponsors will join us as possible. Further details will follow later!

Mrs. Royle organized a Church Service on Monday 9th January in the lounge. Everyone is very welcome to attend this service, which is held once a month.

Our second outing to Milton Keynes was held on the 11th January. We had a lovely afternoon looking around the sales for bargains! Again, it was not too busy and so was very comfortable to get around.

Colin and Phillipa came in to entertain us on the 20th January. We had a lovely morning singing all the old favourites.

On the 23rd January Glynis, Martin and Judy held a Communion Service from St. Mary’s Church Wendover in the lounge. Glynis is more than happy to visit anyone in their room if they wish – just let us know and we will arrange it for you. On Monday the 6th February Mrs. Royle again organized a Church Service in the lounge.

The ladies of the Ivinghoe Bell Ringers very kindly came back to L.P.H. to ‘play the bells’ for us on 7th February. This was a very enjoyable afternoon and the Bell Ringers have promised to come back again during 2012.

Colin and Phillipa came back to entertain us on the 10th February – this was a lovely morning and the residents who attended enjoyed it very much indeed.

We held our St. Valentine’s Day Lunch and Quiz on the 14th February. Sharon cooked a special lunch for the residents and Brenda and Doreen very kindly helped with a special St. Valentine’s Quiz afterwards. Everyone who attended enjoyed the afternoon.

The Charles Pope Ladies Choir came to L.P.H. for the first time on the 15th February. The pianist played our baby grand piano and the ladies of the choir treated us to a programme of hymns, ‘songs from the shows’ and old favourites. We had a very entertaining afternoon.

Whilst I was on annual leave in February, Mrs. Jean Royle kindly did Musical Movements with our residents and Mrs. Jackie Rubin kindly organized a Quiz. Thank you Jean and Jackie, for giving up your time for us – we appreciate your support very much.

Everyone connected with the Nursing Home was delighted with the news that Mrs. Brenda Forty had been awarded an M.B.E. in the New Years Honours List. Brenda has been associated with the Home since it first opened in 1983; she has been involved in fund raising, arranged outings for residents and has served on the Executive and House Management Committees. Following her retirement from Committees some three years ago, she has continued to visit the Home regularly to organise and support social activities such as whist, bridge and dominoes, which the residents enjoy enormously.
