Everyone connected with the Nursing Home was delighted with the news that Mrs. Brenda Forty had been awarded an M.B.E. in the New Years Honours List. Brenda has been associated with the Home since it first opened in 1983; she has been involved in fund raising, arranged outings for residents and has served on the Executive and House Management Committees. Following her retirement from Committees some three years ago, she has continued to visit the Home regularly to organise and support social activities such as whist, bridge and dominoes, which the residents enjoy enormously.

Hello and a very warm welcome to our Newsletter, detailing events and activities for the last three months at Leonard Pulham House.

Christmas is approaching very quickly, so we have included all our forthcoming events – we will be putting up reminders on the notice board as well.

The first event for this Newsletter was entertainment by the Black Dog Band; they came to L.P.H. to entertain on 19th August. The band played very lively country style music and everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. We followed the entertainment with a cream tea. The Black Dog Band will be coming back to L.P.H. during 2012.

Our final summer outing was to the Quainton Railway Museum on the 31st August. Here is an account by our “resident scribe”, Mr Harry Purver:

‘Quainton Railway Museum’ by Harry Purver

As the miserable summer weather dragged on we came to the time of the celebrated visit to the Quainton Railway Museum.

After all the introductions, we assembled outside the Nurses Office to be armed with our envelopes. As your scribe was the only mobile one, he was first on the bus and missed all the comments and asides as the carers arrived in their finery! Then we were off, exploring the environs of Aylesbury. Once again, the impressive town hall standing fairly close to the new theatre both needed some appreciation.

After several small roundabouts, passing into open countryside complete with windmills and tractors, we arrived at the Quainton Railway Museum.

We went into a formidable railway station, complete with old steam engines; it resembled an aircraft hanger. I was lucky enough to be able to go onto the footplate of one of the engines and was invited to “hoot the toot” (!) which I did with relish. One carriage was set up as a dining carriage and various items of luggage dotted around gave the station a very authentic feeling.

After a very good lunch – jacket potatoes with beans and cheese, followed by a large slab of chocolate cake and a mug of “engineer’s tea” we went on our tour of the site. One engine was “steaming” and I went for a ride out of the station and back again.

We all came home very sleepy back to L.P.H. – a lovely day out for all of us.

Harry Purver

On the 16th September the R.A.F. invited us to a Charity Tea Party. We took a few residents and they all enjoyed the afternoon – I think that L.P.H. won the majority of the raffle prizes! Harry won the first prize, of a trip for two around Anfield Stadium, which he subsequently swapped with one of the recruits (who was a Liverpool supporter) for a bottle of whisky. The recruit was ‘over the moon’ and so was Harry!

During September/October I was on annual leave and I would like to thank Mrs. Royle for standing in with Musical Movements and Mrs. Rubin for very kindly doing a Quiz for our residents.

On the 14th October we held our Harvest Festival. The children from Halton Combined School came to sing for us and the service was conducted by Glynis Newman and Martin from St. Mary’s Church, Wendover. We would like to thank the School and St. Mary’s Church for their continuing support of L.P.H.

We had a very lively afternoon on the 21st October with “My Way”. Rob sang for us, but he enlisted the staff to help, which was great fun. We even did a karaoke number for our residents – however, I do not think you will see any of us on the X Factor!

This year we held our Bonfire Night Party on the 4th November. The display was fabulous and this was followed by a traditional Bonfire Night supper of ‘bangers’, jacket potatoes, beans, cheese and coleslaw. This was a lovely evening for the residents, families and sponsors to enjoy together.

Colin and Phillipa came into L.P.H. on the 11th November and we held a very special event for Remembrance Day. Colin and Phillipa very kindly came in early, so that we could all be together for a two minute silence at 11.00 a.m. This was followed by a selection of hymns and songs from the war years.

We would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas (somewhat early) and hope to see you at some stage over the festivities.

We have now received the draft report from the C.Q.C. and are delighted to say that we are compliant with requirements in all areas. The C.Q.C. no longer operate any form of ‘star’ system, so compliance is all that is required. Congratulations are due to all the staff at the Nursing Home”
