About Us
Leonard Pulham Nursing Home is owned and managed by the Abbeyfield Buckinghamshire Society, a registered charity affiliated to the national Abbeyfield Society. Throughout the United Kingdom, as well as several overseas countries, the Abbeyfield movement exists primarily to provide sheltered accommodation for elderly people.
In Buckinghamshire it was felt unsatisfactory that, having encouraged the elderly to live in Abbeyfield sheltered homes, they had to move elsewhere if they later became disabled. It was one of our founders, Leonard Pulham, who had the idea of building the present home to provide full time nursing care.
The home opened in 1981. Day to day management is provided by the Home Manager and her Deputy, who are both full time employees. They are responsible to an Executive Committee, who are all volunteers.
Our primary aim is to provide nursing care for those persons who, due to disability, can no longer be cared for in their own homes or in sheltered housing. Priority is given to those coming from Abbeyfield houses in Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties. We have also had a long association with both the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Buckinghamshire Masonic Society, and so also give priority to their members and dependants who require full time nursing care. However, a majority of our residents have no previous association with any of the above organisations.
The home is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection for nursing all physical disabilities and is inspected twice yearly. Qualified nursing staff are on duty at all times, supplemented by a high ratio of trained care assistants and other staff. There is close co-operation with doctors in the local general practice who visit the home weekly and are available for emergencies.
We are unfortunately unable to accept residents with mental illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease.
