The Abbeyfield Society

The aim of the Abbeyfield movement is to provide care and companionship for elderly people in family sized houses.

The first Abbeyfield house was opened in 1956 by Richard Carr-Gomme, who bought a house in Abbeyfield Road, Bermondsey, in south-east London, and let the rooms to single lonely people. The National Society was founded three years later and since then the movement has flourished and expanded rapidly.

There are now nearly 800 houses in the UK providing accommodation for about 8,000 residents. Approximately one third of the houses are owned and managed by Abbeyfield UK, which is a subsidiary of the National Society. The remainder are owned ad run by local Abbeyfield societies, each of which is a registered Provident Society with its own management committee, and is affiliated to the National Society.
